Born and bred in southern California, I competed in doubles volleyball and always watched the sailboats from the beach. At 30 I was a passenger in a car that hit a bull crossing the freeway resulting in a 3” diameter hole in the front of my skull and a slight case of death (I got better). Recovering on Catalina Island I rapidly became bored and decided enough was enough and immediately enrolled in sailing lessons. I have never been far from the ocean. Too much playing on the ocean finally led my former instructors and mentors to suggest I consider teaching sailing. Following their advice I am currently teaching ASA-101, 103, 104, 105, and 114. When I am not teaching or playing with my wife and daughter, I try to spend as much time as I can on the water, on and around the Channel Islands looking for another anchorage to watch a sunset from.

Andy’s love for sailing grew from more than a hobby to a way of life by converting a 30’ sailboat into a blue water cruiser in Annapolis and sailing solo for points south; bartering baked homemade bread with other cruisers. After sailing catamarans around the Caribbean, he has settled in the Southbay. Currently the captain a Whale Watching ship “The Voyager” out of Redondo Beach and raising and teaching his two young children the beauty of the water and sailing. Kat has been sailing since she was nine years old, when her parents dragged her kicking and screaming aboard their 36 foot sailboat to cruise the coasts of California and Mexico. Years later, no longer kicking and screaming, and longing to return to a life on the water, she joined the sailing team at UC San Diego. A member for four years, she cemented the basics and learned the finer points of sailing. After college, she began working with Action Quest, a sailing and diving adventure camp for teens in the British Virgin Islands. There she worked as a captain, sailing instructor and EMT aboard 50 foot cruising sailboats. What she loves most about sailing is that there is always something more to learn. Kat believes that the best sailor understands they will never know it all, but strives to learn all they can. She holds a 100 ton US Coast Guard Masters license and is an American Sailing Association and US Sailing certified instructor. When not devising new ways to get out on the water or dreaming of circumnavigating the globe with her fiancé, she works as a intensive care nurse.
